A new documentary focused on Tony-winning stage and screen icon Bea Arthur will screen in NYC. DancinDan Productions and Daryl Roth‘s Bea Arthur: The Documentary – “I’ve Done Everything But Porn” will screen at The New School’s John L. Tishman Auditorium October 25, given in partnership with The New School’s School of Drama and the Ali Forney Center.

The film features a never-before-seen interview with Arthur, who passed away at the age of 86 in 2009. Also featured are Arthur’s friends, colleagues, and collaborators, including Chita Rivera, Sheldon Harnick, Austin Pendleton, Adrienne Barbeau, Rosie O’Donnell, and many more.

The documentary explores Arthur’s entire career, from her training at The New School and early career Off-Broadway performances before becoming a bonafide Broadway and television star. Arthur would win her Tony Award for her wry take on Auntie Mame’s bestie Vera Charles in Mame, a performance she would repeat for the 1974 screen version; and also created the role of Yente in the original cast of Fiddler on the Roof. The performance brought Arthur to Hollywood, where she would play the title role in the long-running series Maude (after guest-starring in the same role on All in the Family) before creating perhaps her most indelible character, the sarcastically warm Dorothy Zbornak in The Golden Girls. She would return to Broadway in 2002 with a solo cabaret act Bea Arthur on Broadway.

“I was honored when Bea asked me to produce her one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway. It was a joy to see audiences overwhelmingly embrace her humor and heart and she loved every minute!,” says Roth in a statement. “This documentary created with love and respect offers a very personal look at Bea’s early career and how she became so beloved by so many!”

“She was the tall, hilariously brassy woman people recognized from the stage and screen, yet she was also deeply sensitive, vulnerable, and compassionate,” adds Emmy winner Daniel Watt of DancinDan Productions. “This film gives her the space to tell her own story while those who knew her best revealing the woman behind that commanding public persona.”

The October 25 screening will be followed by a Q&A. Tickets are available here.
