LYNN, Mass. —

Two men accused of attacking an off-duty New York City Police Department detective in New York were arrested Tuesday night in Lynn, Massachusetts, police said.

Officials said the two men, identified as Dangelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, were on a motorized bike when they approached the 33-year-old victim just before 2 p.m. Friday.

The suspects stabbed and slashed the victim and removed a chain from around his neck before fleeing the scene, officials said.

The victim was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. His name has not been released.

Caraballo and Mejia were taken into custody in Lynn by NYPD detectives assigned to the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force with assistance from the U.S Marshals Service in the District of Massachusetts, Massachusetts State Police and the Lynn Police Department, officials said.

“The attempted murder of an off-duty NYPD detective is an attack on every member of law-enforcement, and these two fugitives will now face justice,” said Dennis Matulewicz, head of the U.S. Marshals Service for the District of Massachusetts. “These arrests are the result of the exceptional teamwork between the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Forces and our outstanding state and local partners who worked tirelessly on this investigation. The U.S. Marshals Service will always relentlessly pursue those who commit acts of violence, and our prayers are with the NYPD detective for a fast and full recovery.”

The fugitives are currently in custody of the Massachusetts State Police awaiting extradition to New York.
