More than half of Jewish voters in New York City say Jewish New Yorkers are unsafe, and 42% report being verbally harassed because of their religion, according to a new Honan Strategy Group poll.
The survey, conducted ahead of the third anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attacks in Israel, found that 51% of Jewish voters considered Jewish New Yorkers unsafe, compared with 38% of non-Jewish voters, The New York Post reported Wednesday.
Among Jewish respondents, 47% said they felt safe, and 2% did not answer. Fifty-five percent said safety had worsened since the attacks.
“Half of Jews saying they feel unsafe is an alarming figure. The Jewish people are intertwined with the culture and history of New York City,” Honan Strategy Group CEO Bradley Honan said.
The findings also showed how safety concerns have affected Jewish respondents’ behavior, including whether they display religious symbols or disclose their Jewish identity.
Thirty-six percent of Jewish voters said they had stopped wearing Jewish symbols, while one in four said they had concealed their Jewish identity online or at work.
Half said it was unsafe to wear a kippah or Star of David.
Public protests drew particularly high levels of concern, with 59% of Jewish voters saying protests were unsafe for Jews, roughly twice the share of non-Jewish voters who expressed that view.
On college campuses, 40% of Jewish voters said conditions were unsafe for Jews, while 57% said conditions were safe.
The survey found that 42% of Jewish respondents had experienced verbal harassment because they were Jewish, while 58% said they had not.
One-third of Jewish voters said they had witnessed or personally experienced an antisemitic incident in the city’s five boroughs during the past year, compared with 12% of non-Jewish voters.
The Honan Strategy Group’s 5 Borough Barometer surveyed 1,167 likely New York City voters by text from Oct. 2-6. The reported margin of error for the overall survey was 2.97 percentage points. The poll included an oversample of 503 Jewish voters, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.36 percentage points.
