Pete Davidson questioned Zohran Mamdani’s connection to Staten Island during a recent Variety interview. The comedian has long been closely associated with the borough. His comments focused on Mamdani’s hometown affiliation.

Pete Davidson questions whether Zohran Mamdani is really “Staten Island”

Davidson questioned whether Mamdani had the borough’s identity. “Zohran Mamdani … is he Staten Island? I don’t know,” he said in a video by Variety. “I don’t think he’s from Staten Island.”

The comedian then questioned whether Mamdani had “Staten Island’s heart.” Davidson clarified that he did not have an issue with the mayor personally. “I don’t have a problem with the guy,” he said.

However, Davidson firmly separated Mamdani from the borough’s identity. “I definitely don’t think he’s Staten Island at all,” he added.

Mamdani previously represented Astoria and nearby Queens neighborhoods in the New York State Assembly before becoming mayor. His remarks added another chapter to Davidson’s comments about Mamdani.

Davidson described Staten Island as having a distinct political culture. He also discussed his family’s political background while explaining his perspective. Those comments framed his criticism around the borough and its identity.

Davidson later joked about what makes someone a Staten Island politician. “You are not a real Staten Island politician unless you have a secret family and know one mobster,” he said. He then added, “I would not trust you to run Staten Island.”

The comments followed Davidson’s earlier criticism involving the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. During Jimmy Kimmel Live, he asked Mamdani to address the BQE.

Davidson’s Staten Island connection is also central to his entertainment career. He starred in The King of Staten Island, which drew heavily from his experiences there. That connection added context to his comments about Mamdani’s ties to the borough.

For Davidson, the borough represents more than a location. His remarks reflected his personal understanding of Staten Island’s culture.

The exchange did not appear to signal a personal feud between Davidson and Mamdani. Davidson repeatedly framed his remarks around Staten Island rather than personal animosity.
