The guitarist says his words were misinterpreted and that while he has taken a break from touring, he has not ruled out returning to the stage with Queen in the future.
“I could never say never”
The 79-year-old musician had originally told The Times that he made a personal decision around 18 months ago that he did not want to tour, after almost five decades of life on the road.
May explained that while he still loves performing and travelling, lengthy tours require giving up a considerable amount of personal freedom.
He said he wanted more time for his wife Anita Dobson, his grandchildren and his work in astrophysics.
His comments quickly led to headlines suggesting Queen’s touring days were over.
May has now responded, saying that interpretation was not what he meant.
He stressed that he had made a personal decision to take a break from touring rather than permanently closing the door on Queen returning to the road.

Queen projects continue
May also reassured fans that he and drummer Roger Taylor continue to work together on Queen projects behind the scenes, while he has been making new music.
The guitarist said he does not know what the future holds and remains open to new ideas.
Queen last completed a major tour with Adam Lambert in February 2024, when their Rhapsody Tour concluded in Japan.
May has also previously spoken about exploring a different kind of Queen live experience, potentially using immersive technology rather than following the format of a traditional world tour.
For now, there may be a break from the road, but according to Sir Brian May himself, the door to another Queen tour has not been closed.
