A handwritten invitation from fifth-grader Violet Cusick brought New York Governor Kathy Hochul to Staten Island’s Notre Dame Academy. Violet handed her the note at a Women’s History Month event, and months later, the governor accepted. Hochul met newly elected student leaders and joined their swearing-in ceremony in a fifth grade classroom. The all-girls Catholic school had just 24-hour notice to prepare for the visit to its Grymes Hill campus. Students discussed serving their community, and Hochul told them she had run for public office 16 times.
