A person was shot during an encounter involving federal law enforcement agents in Marble Hill on Thursday afternoon, according to the NYPD.
The shooting occurred around 4 p.m., police said. The person who was shot was conscious and receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital as of 5:24 p.m., according to the department.
The NYPD said its officers were not involved in the shooting and were not at the scene when it happened.
Police did not identify the federal agency involved or say what led to the shooting.
City Councilmember Pierina Sanchez said school staff and mutual aid organizers told her that ICE agents fired through a car’s windshield and that as many as seven shots were heard. Gothamist has not independently verified those claims.
“They’re terrorizing our communities. They’re reckless. We want them out of here,” Sanchez said.
The incident comes three days after eight elected officials representing the Bronx and Upper Manhattan sent a letter to Kingsbridge Associates, urging the company and Target to prohibit ICE agents from using the parking lot at 40 W. 225th St. as a staging area.
“Our communities are outraged,” Sanchez and seven other elected officials, including Councilmembers Carmen De La Rosa and Eric Dinowitz and U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat, wrote in the Oct. 5 letter. “This is private property operated by or for Target, where our neighbors shop, work, and bring their families.”
The officials cited reports of ICE activity at the location. It was not immediately clear whether Thursday’s shooting was connected to that activity.
Sanchez, who represents the area, said the shooting occurred near a location where ICE agents have reportedly been staging. She added that multiple elected officials were heading to the scene.
Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, called for an investigation into the shooting and the release of body camera footage.
“ICE’s violent tactics are a clear danger to all New Yorkers, as today’s shooting in a residential neighborhood demonstrates,” Awawdeh said. “We demand an immediate investigation into the shooting, the release of the body camera footage, and accountability for any ICE agents who used excessive force.”
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
