NEW YORK (WABC) — A third-generation florist is turning fresh flowers into temporary public art, creating pop-up bouquets around New York City from blooms that might otherwise be left over.

David Kisan, founder of Sip N Bloom, calls the project “Floral Graffiti.”

The idea grew out of his flower-arranging sessions with clients, which left him with extra flowers.

Kisan gathers fresh stems from the floral district on West 28th Street and uses them to create colorful arrangements in public spaces.

“I like to have a pop, sometimes I’ve been known to be a little Picasso when I come to my flower arranging because I like to be a big, interesting and fun…just like you,” Kisan said with a laugh.

His pop-up bouquets have appeared in Hell’s Kitchen and Little Italy, and the temporary installations are designed to encourage passersby to stop and appreciate their surroundings.

“They are such a gorgeous time sensitive structures and they really allow us to take a minute, take a beat and just be present and I think that’s a really beautiful thing,” Kisan said.

One passerby, a stylist, was struck by an arrangement.

“I’m a stylist, so this is totally my jam, it’s beautiful and gorgeous,” the person said.

Kisan hopes to eventually partner with businesses and brands as he considers where to place his next arrangement.

Although he initially expected people to pick flowers from the displays, Kisan said that generally hasn’t happened.

“I thought that when I started doing this for sure it will be picked and pulled but really they don’t,” he said.

Instead, people often stop to take photographs.

“Isn’t that a great testament to the New Yorkers that they see the beauty but don’t take from it,” Kisan said.
