NEW YORK (TNND) — Federal law enforcement agents shot a person in New York City on Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) made the announcement on social media, adding that the shooting happened in the Bronx around 4 p.m.

“The individual who was shot is at a nearby hospital and is currently conscious and receiving medical attention,” NYPD wrote on X.”The NYPD was not involved in the incident and was not on scene at the time of the shooting,” police added.

Fox News reported that the agents involved were with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Federal authorities did not immediately release the person’s identity or say what led up to the shooting.

An FBI spokesperson told The Associated Press an evidence response team was sent to assist Department of Homeland Security partners at the scene, but offered no further details.

Video circulating on social media showed a group of apparent protesters screaming vulgarities at a federal agent as officials gathered at the scene.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she was briefed on the shooting.

“We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” the governor wrote on X. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”

The shooting remains under investigation.
