The owners of Pint, located on Wayne Street in Jersey City, issued a video apology on Instagram on Thursday, Oct. 8, saying the incident happened without their knowledge.
The bar’s longtime owner called the team name “truly offensive” and said it “violates both how we want to treat our community and standards we have for our business.”
The trivia host has since been fired, and all money raised during that night’s event will be donated to sexual violence prevention programs, the owners said.
“Our goal and the goal we’ve had for 17 years running this bar is making it a safe and welcoming space for everyone,” the owner said.
The owners also encouraged anyone who felt unwelcome or uncomfortable at the bar to speak up.
The incident sparked heated debate on Reddit, where commenters were divided over whether the team name crossed a line and how much blame the bar deserved.
“Rape is never an acceptable punchline, [explative],” one commenter wrote.
Another pointed out that sexual assault survivors are also part of the LGBTQ+ community.
“There are a lot of gay SA survivors in this city, it’s especially abhorrent that one of our spaces is doing this,” the commenter wrote.
Others argued that while the name was offensive, the backlash against the bar had gone too far.
“That doesn’t automatically make the entire bar an unsafe space for women,” one commenter wrote. “Read the room, call out the bad joke, and move on!”
Another said offensive trivia team names were nothing new, citing a previous team called “camp mystic swim team” during the week of the Texas floods.
