HAMILTON HEIGHTS, Manhattan (WABC) — Another case of people entering New York City’s sewer system surfaced early Sunday after three men were seen going into a manhole in Hamilton Heights, according to police.

The men were spotted going into a manhole on West 141st Street between Amsterdam and Broadway avenues shortly before 1 a.m. When officers arrived, the three men were gone.

The incident is the first of its kind reported in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood.

The case follows a similar incident Friday on the Upper East Side, where police said five people, including four men and a woman, were seen emerging from a manhole on East 82nd Street just after 2 a.m. Police said the group drove away in a black SUV. Investigators found shovels and other tools at the scene.

Last month, two people were arrested after entering a manhole on East 61st Street during the United Nations General Assembly, when security was heightened in the city.

Officials with the Department of Environmental Protection believe some people are entering the sewer system in search of valuables and other scrap metal, particularly after items have been washed through the system during storms.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the incidents and search for the suspects.
