The NYPD is once again investigating another case of people entering the city’s sewer system — this time multiple people were spotted going into a manhole in Hamilton Heights.
Police officials said a 911 caller reported seeing at least three men enter through the manhole near West 141st Street and Hamilton Place around 1 a.m. on Sunday.
A team of investigators from the FDNY and NYPD were working the scene overnight, looking for evidence in the sewer system that would lead them to the mystery crew. Detectives were also out during the afternoon talking to neighbors.
“As a community we have to come together and find out what’s going on so that we could protect ourselves and our children,” one Hamilton Heights resident said Sunday afternoon.
This latest incident comes only two days after a group of five people were seen coming out of a manhole on the Upper East Side early Friday. Police are now looking for that quintet that left in a black SUV.
Authorities don’t believe the so-called “drain diving” is tied to anything nefarious. The NYPD says it has gotten multiple reports about people entering the sewer system after a storm to look for valuables and scrap metal.
The department says it has had “a robust response to these incidents” and continues to respond as appropriate.
