ALBANY- The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee have launched an expanded statewide effort to combat impaired driving involving alcohol, cannabis, and prescription drugs.

During eight targeted enforcement periods in 2026, law enforcement officers issued more than 15,700 tickets to alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers, according to the state.

The initiative also includes “Operation Prevent,” which targets underage drinking at concerts and summer events.  Since May, investigators have checked identification at 35 major events, issuing 279 citations and seizing 31,879 fake IDs.

A bilingual public awareness campaign running from Memorial Day through Labor Day generated more than 72 million impressions through social media, streaming services, convenience stores, gas stations and major sports venues.

DMV Acting Commissioner Christian Jackstadt said the effort aims to prevent roadway deaths through coordinated enforcement and public education. State officials urge motorists to plan for a sober ride rather than risk driving while impaired.
