New York veterans will explore various career pathways and learn about available resources, services, and important veterans’ policy at a free summit at the Intrepid Museum this week.

Assembly Members Landon Dais, Steve Stern and Kwani B. O’Pharrow will host the New York Veterans Summit, sponsored by Schneps Media (parent company of amNewYork), on Oct. 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum, located at Pier 86 on W. 46th Street and 12th Avenue.

Susan Marenoff-Zausner, president of the museum, will give opening remarks.

Veterans, politicians, labor leaders, higher education representatives and veterans-service representatives will be on site to discuss employment opportunities, access to resources and support for those transitioning from military to civilian life.

The event will also look at how local agencies and community organizations can better serve New York’s veteran population.

Featured participants include Gary LaBarbera, president of the New York Building and Construction Trades Council, who will discuss Helmets to Hardhats, a program that connects military veterans with career opportunities in the skilled trades.

Rear Admiral. John A. Okon, president of SUNY Maritime College, will discuss leadership and career opportunities following military service. Kenneth Fisher, chief executive officer of Fisher House and co-chair of the Intrepid Museum Board of Trustees, and former Congress Member Max Rose, a combat veteran, are also scheduled to attend.

Stern and O’Pharrow will focus on the state’s role in supporting New York’s veteran community, while NYC Council Member Frank Morano of Staten Island will zero in on the city’s efforts.

NYC Department of Veterans’ Services Commissioner Yesenia Mata will discuss gaps in service delivery and ways to better connect veterans with available resources.

In addition to the panel discussions, veterans and attendees will have opportunities to connect directly with organization representatives offering career and benefits information, as well as other resources.

The summit is intended to recognize veterans’ service while highlighting programs and initiatives designed to help them access employment, support and other opportunities after they leave the military.
