A man suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound Wednesday afternoon during a dispute at a recording studio in Hampton, police said.

Hampton Public Safety Communications received a report of a shooting at about 4:30 p.m. in the first block of East Queens Way. Officers arrived and found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the Hampton Police Division.

Fire and rescue personnel transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.

A preliminary investigation found that the victim and a suspect were at the recording studio when they got into a verbal argument. The dispute escalated into a physical struggle over a firearm, which discharged and struck the victim, police said.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation by the Hampton Police Major Crimes Unit. Detectives believe the incident stemmed from a dispute between two people who knew each other and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community, police said.
