ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) – A suspicious envelope prompted a four-hour investigation and closure of the Essex County government building in Elizabethtown, New York, but authorities say it was a false alarm.
New York State Police were called in after workers found a suspicious envelope from outside the region.
Authorities closed the government center for the remainder of the day and spent four hours investigating. “Went in in full protective gear, opened the letter, and determined that there was no threat, no white powder. It was a mail-in ballot, and the response here was lifted. Everything is all clear, everyone has returned home, and the community is all safe,” said New York State Police Capt. Christopher Giovazzino.
The government center will open back up Friday morning.
