The Utica Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying the remains of an infant that was found at the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority facility on Wednesday.

Police say the infant was female, and they are still trying to figure out how her remains ended up at the facility. Police believe she was about one to two weeks old.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen any suspicious or unusual activity to submit tips at mohawkvalleycrimestoppers.com.

They stress that no piece of information is too small.

“Anyone going through similar circumstances, having difficulty with pregnancies, with childbearing, or that fact that you may be pregnant and having a child in unwanted circumstances, please turn it over to a safe location,” said Capt. Michael Curley of the Utica Police Department. “You will not be prosecuted in New York state. It protects you in that matter, and the child’s safety is the foremost thing we need to worry about in all those situations.”
