The Plaza Hotel will close to guests beginning in January for a multiyear renovation project, according to a report by The New York Times.

The hotel’s last day of service is scheduled for Jan. 19, with construction expected to begin the following day.

The project will focus on repairing the building’s 119-year-old façade, according to the Times.

The Plaza, located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, is designated a New York City landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Renovations to the building must adhere to historic preservation standards.

Over its more than century-long history, the hotel has changed ownership several times and undergone multiple renovation projects.

The Plaza last closed in 2005 for a major redevelopment that added more than 180 condominiums alongside more than 200 hotel rooms.

It remains unclear how the upcoming construction will affect full-time residents. No details have been provided about what will happen to the hotel’s more than 300 employees during the closure.

The renovation is expected to take four years.
