Former Kansas State University All-American placekicker and professional football player Matt McCrane announced earlier this week that he’ll be moving back to Manhattan to start a career in commercial real estate, business development, and community revitalization at Back 9 Development.

McCrane finished his K-State career as one of the most accurate kickers in school history before continuing his football career professionally in the NFL and UFL. Most recently, he made professional football history by converting the first four-point field goal in the UFL with the DC Defenders.

A native of Brownwood, Texas, from 2014 to 2017, McCrane converted 133-of-134 extra point attempts and 57-of-66 field goal attempts. McCrane ranks No. 2 in Big 12 history and No. 7 in NCAA history for career field goal percentage (86.4%).

After going undrafted, McCrane was signed by the Arizona Cardinals before spending time with the Raiders, Steelers, Browns, Eagles and Lions in the NFL, the New York Guardians in the XFL and the DC Defenders in the UFL.

During the 2026 season, McCrane made four field goals from 60 yards or longer — two in the regular season and two in the postseason — setting the professional-football single-season record for 60-yard field goals.

Beyond football, McCrane has built a career in entrepreneurship, business ownership, and community leadership, including experience in restaurant franchise ownership, business operations, and civic involvement.

“Manhattan and Kansas State have always meant a great deal to me,” McCrane said in a statement. “This community helped shape who I am, both personally and professionally. I’m excited to be back, working alongside the team at Back 9 to help businesses grow, attract new investment, and contribute to the continued development of the Little Apple.”

McCrane’s focus will include commercial property sales and leasing, identifying development opportunities, building relationships with local business owners and investors, and supporting projects that strengthen Manhattan’s long-term economic growth.

“Football taught me the importance of preparation, relationships, and surrounding yourself with great people,” McCrane added. “I see a lot of those same principles in real estate and development. My goal is to bring that competitive mindset and work ethic into serving this community.”

McCrane and his family have returned to Manhattan, where he looks forward to reconnecting with the K-State community while establishing his next professional chapter.
