The New York Jets’ biggest rival in the AFC East is the New England Patriots. The Patriots probably don’t feel the same way, which only makes this game more intense from a Gang Green perspective.
New England has been giving the Jets the business for a long time.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote this week, “Before their win over [Bailey] Zappe & Co. in the 2023 finale — Belichick’s final game as the Patriots’ coach — the Jets had gone 12 seasons without a victory at Gillette. It came in the 2010 AFC Divisional playoffs, probably their best moment as a franchise since Super Bowl III in 1969. Since then, they’re 1-14 in Foxborough, including six losses by 14 or more points.”
While the Jets may be getting used to getting slapped around by the Patriots, Geno Smith isn’t.
Over the last two years, Smith has successfully gone into Foxboro as the starting quarterback of the other team and has come away with a victory in both of those matchups.
He did it in 2025 with the Las Vegas Raiders, and he did it in 2024 with the Seattle Seahawks. Can he make it three in a row with three different teams? That would have to be some type of record or something if he did.
If you combine those previous pair of Smith performances, he has thrown for 689 passing yards, has a two-to-one touchdown-to-interception ratio, and has averaged a 72.8% completion percentage.
Those results and confidence from Smith having done it should help the Jets mentally as they head into this huge AFC East matchup.
