(Bloomberg) — Anthropic PBC should pause its initial public offering until it has fully addressed risks around the safety, governance and pace of development of artificial intelligence, according to New York City’s comptroller.

The Claude developer should instead focus on addressing the unprecedented risks of the technology, according to a letter from Mark Levine letter addressed to Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei on Wednesday. The comptroller looks after the city’s fiscal health and oversees public pension funds with more than $325 billion in assets.
The company is planning to go public as early as next month in an IPO that could meet or exceed the amount raised by SpaceX in its record-setting debut, people familiar with the matter have said. Anthropic met with selected investors at its headquarters on Wednesday and disclosed it made $16.8 billion of revenue in the third quarter of this year, Bloomberg News reported.
The “morally binding accord” on AI safety between the Trump administration and AI companies including Anthropic was insufficient, Levine wrote. He urged Anthropic to prioritize establishing a governance regime to match concerns raised by both the company itself and others, including industry researchers.
“Anthropic should disclose with specificity how it will implement appropriate audits and controls, the scope of what these controls are intended to address, as well as a projected timeline,” Levine wrote.
“This should also include an explanation of whether and how these controls will sufficiently address your call to slow the pace at which the capabilities of AI models advance,” he added.
A representative for Anthropic didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
