STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Raw mild cheddar cheese produced by a New York dairy is being recalled over potential contamination with two strains of E. coli bacteria, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Family Farmstead Dairy, based in Worcester, New York, announced the recall on Oct. 15 after testing identified Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O26:H11 and O45:H2 in samples of its raw cheddar cheese.
The recalled product is Family Farmstead Dairy Raw Mild Cheddar Cheese with lot code and best-by date of July 22, 2027.
The affected cheese was distributed to grocery stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia and Massachusetts, with the possibility of further distribution to other states.
No illnesses or allergic reactions had been reported in connection with the recall as of the FDA’s announcement.
Consumers who purchased the affected cheese are advised not to eat it. The product should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
No other Family Farmstead Dairy products are included in the recall.
E. coli infections can cause diarrhea, which may be bloody. In some cases, the infection can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication that can cause kidney failure.
Young children and older adults are particularly vulnerable to severe complications.
