MANHATTAN (WABC) — Darryl Rodriguez, the 26-year-old man fatally shot in a Midtown subway station over the weekend, is being remembered by family and neighbors as police continue searching for the gunman.
Police said Rodriguez was shot in the chest during an argument on the uptown E train platform at the Seventh Avenue-53rd Street station around 12:20 p.m. Saturday. Investigators have described the shooting as a targeted attack and are searching for a suspect who was seen wearing red clothing, a black vest and a face mask.
Authorities have not disclosed what sparked the confrontation.
As the investigation continues, neighbors are reflecting on Rodriguez’s life. They said he was a twin and worked as a security guard. His brother serves in the Marines and is stationed in Texas.
The shooting unfolded in front of subway riders, some of whom described the panic that followed the gunfire.
“She was doing compressions even before the police came there…people circled around,” one witness said, describing a woman who performed CPR on the victim before emergency crews arrived.
Another witness recalled, “we all huddled together and the guy shot again…people started running out and we went up the stairs.”
Rodriguez’s father was too distraught to speak publicly about his son’s death.
Police have not announced any arrests, and the search for the suspect remains ongoing.
