Citizens Union, New York City’s nonpartisan and independent good-government group, has announced its endorsement of Colonel (Ret.) Thomas P. Sullivan in his campaign for the New York State Assembly in District 23.
In its endorsement, Citizens Union praised Sullivan’s commitment and integrity to District 23 and believes he is the “candidate most likely to advance our reform efforts in this open-seat race.” Citizens Union pointed to his community leadership and highlighted Sullivan’s overall bipartisan alignment, notably on money in politics, as he supports greater transparency in campaign finance systems, including stronger disclosure of individual donors to super PACs.
Sullivan is grateful for the endorsement of the long-standing Citizens Union. He acknowledges its strength as, out of all the candidates running for office, Citizens Union chose to endorse only four, and he was the only Republican. This mirrors both Sullivan’s and the Citizens Union’s dedication to honesty, transparency, and government accountability in serving constituents.
Since 1897, Citizens Union has worked to uphold fair, open elections and government accountability. Through its reform efforts, Citizens Union has upheld New York City’s democracy for decades through programming that includes, but is not limited to, advocating for the influence of money in politics, creating community boards, and promoting public education.
