Christian GrattoMALONE, N.Y. —

Andrew Hernandez, a New York inmate already serving time for killing his mother, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering his cellmate at Upstate Correctional Facility in Malone.

Hernandez pleaded guilty to first-degree murder after police said he used his shoelaces to kill Michael Campbell.

Campbell was found dead in their shared cell on April 6. According to his mother, Campbell had been serving a 20-year-to-life sentence for stealing a van, while Hernandez was incarcerated for shooting his mother in the back of the head with a rifle in 2001. Hernandez was 18 years old when he was sentenced to 19 years in prison for the crime.

On Monday, Hernandez received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

In court, Campbell’s mother and sister delivered emotional testimony, carrying his ashes while addressing the judge.

“This is my son Michael. All he wanted was to come home,” said Joan Scotchmer, Campbell’s mother.

Hernandez chose not to make a statement in court.
