UTICA, N.Y. — New York State Electric & Gas is working to strengthen the electric grid with transmission upgrades across New York.
NYSEG said that it has corrected 200 asset condition issues on 35 transmission lines in 2026 and plans to update more than 230 lines covering about 800 miles through 2031.
In 2025, the company addressed more than 500 issues on 62 lines and intends to fix around 370 deficiencies by the end of the year, according to NYSEG.
“Transmission lines act as the highway of the electric grid across New York. These high-voltage power lines move large amounts of electricity over long distances from power generation sources to local substations,” NYSEG stated.
NYSEG is prioritizing upgrades based on the condition of each asset and its impact on the system if it fails, according to the utility company.
Work includes replacing old poles, deteriorated crossarms and hardware, and upgrading transmission structures.
New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has finished upgrades to the Fraser Substation in Oneonta.
