BROOKLYN (WABC) — A 33-year-old DoorDash delivery worker was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and police are searching for the driver who fled the scene.
The crash happened at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Surveillance video from Holic Thai Bistro captured the collision, showing a white 2026 Hyundai Elantra striking the cyclist and throwing him into the street. The video also shows the driver leaving the scene without stopping to check on the injured man, who remained on the roadway in pain.
“Oh my God this is crazy,” a witness can be heard saying in video from the scene.
Anthony Green, who works across the street from where the crash occurred, said he was disturbed by the driver’s actions.
“I just feel like it’s just a very selfish thing to do if you’re just speeding and not looking around just because you got somewhere to be,” Green said.
Green said the crash reflects broader safety concerns in the area.
“I am cautious when walking around and like on my rearview, seeing all these cars, like I hear all the engines, like they go fast, like down the block,” he said.
The incident has renewed attention on the risks faced by bicycle delivery workers in New York City.
“Delivery work is the deadliest job in New York City and it’s clearly a call to action to City Hall, to the City Council to finally make ordering and delivering food and goods by bike safe,” said Alexa Sledge, senior director of strategy and communications for Transportation Alternatives.
Sledge said infrastructure improvements could help prevent similar crashes.
“There are tens of thousands of delivery workers delivering goods right now in New York City, and yet 97% of our streets still do not have a protected bike line,” she said.
As of the latest update, the DoorDash worker remained hospitalized in critical condition while police continued searching for the driver of the Hyundai.
