New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the Metro IAF Mayoral Accountability Assembly at Queens College on Sunday October 11, 2026 to engage with the leaders of the IAF regarding his campaign promises and what he has accomplished.
In spite of the heavy rains, more than 2,000 city residents, mostly from Queens, attended.
This event was one of many large-scale civic gatherings organized by Metro IAF NY (part of the Industrial Areas Foundation, the nation’s oldest and largest multi-faith network of community organizations). The coalition has organized thousands of New Yorkers, including members from local congregations, mosques, non-profits, and housing/business associations.
In the past, the assembly brought together leading mayoral and public-office candidates (such as former Governor Andrew Cuomo, Comptroller Brad Lander, former Comptroller Scott Stringer, Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, and then-New York State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani) to publicly commit to specific, measurable demands rather than vague promises. Past assemblies have pressured candidates for concrete pledges on major urban concerns, including repairs at NYCHA housing complexes as well as independent oversight to eliminate repair backlogs.
One of the topics discussed was addressing the city’s mental health crisis with funding and establishing crisis stabilization centers across all boroughs. To address community safety by directing city commissioners to coordinate with local affiliates and addressing housing affordability. The organization leaders from Queens and other boroughs spoke directly to Mayor Mamdani on stage and he responded to each question asked.
The mayor agreed to several key commitments:
1- Affordable Housing: He pledged to build thousands of new affordable homes on city-owned land across more than 30 sites, including pursuing large-scale housing development at the Aqueduct Racetrack site in Queens.
2- NYCHA Repairs: He promised to address mold and disrepair in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) buildings and expand the Critical Repairs Initiative citywide by June 30, 2027.
3- Mental Health Services: He committed to opening 10 mental health crisis stabilization centers across the five boroughs, beginning in Fiscal Year 2028.
4- Public Safety: Reaffirmed commitments to collaborate with community leaders and NYPD leadership on neighborhood safety—noting historic lows in shootings and murders while pledging continued work—and committed to meeting with Metro IAF leaders and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch (as well as a meeting with the First Deputy Mayor within 30 days).
The mayor has committed millions of dollars for programs to address each of the issues discussed. More than 10 deputy mayors joined the mayor with three joining the mayor on stage.
