An unnamed protester dressed as a construction worker and hauled a bag across on the Manhattan side of the historic span at around 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 21. He then climbed above zooming traffic and carefully tied a massive banner reading “vote nature” to the framework. Tourists stopped taking selfies and immediately stared onward.

The entire stunt took about 15 minutes.

“The environment is not even in the top ten issues that voters care about, but it is essentially the most important issue that you need to care about. Because if we don’t take care of the environment right now, then all the other problems are going to continue to get exponentially worse,” the anonymous protester said.

Climate activist group Extinction Rebellion claimed responsibility for the banner drop. Known for its protest actions, the group said earlier this year that it was under investigation by President Donald Trump’s FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.

“The tech bros want us to think that we can live in some sort of fantastic utopian future, where all the things will be taken care of by machines. Our food will be made in labs. We’ll breathe air that we made from carbon dioxide. All of this stuff, and we’ll live in a dump,” the protester added. “Nature is the whole reason for this planet. Nature is the whole reason for life. We have to start taking advantage and realizing the situation we’re in right now.”

The lone protester managed to perform the stunt without being arrested at the scene.

This comes less than a month before voters cast their ballots in what is expected to be a tumultuous midterm election.
