There is a pressing need for affordable housing and a new complex in Brooklyn Park aims to help address that issue.

Local and state lawmakers were on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Sandgrass Pointe.

The 44-unit affordable housing complex, located on 69th Avenue North near North View Middle School, features a mix of apartment and townhouse options ranging from one to four bedrooms.

It also includes a playground, a fitness center and energy-efficient amenities throughout the property.

Developers say the eco-friendly design will translate directly to savings.

“The apartments and the townhomes are extremely well insulated and have extremely efficient heating and cooling, water heating, all those things,” said Eric Wright, developer with Columbus, Ohio-based Woda Cooper Cos. “So expect residents’ utility bills are going to be significantly less than what you might be at in a single-family home, an older apartment building.”

Another feature of the complex is its partnership with Project for Pride in Living, which will offer on-site supportive services to some of the residents.

“We meet with families and individuals everyday in their unit. Things from as simple as going over your lease so that you don’t do anything to break the lease and go back out on the street, to how do you turn on the stove, do you need a dentist appointment?” said Karla Henderson, president and chief executive officer of Project for Pride in Living.

Officials say demand at Sandgrass Pointe is already high with more applicants than there are available units.

Woda Cooper Cos. is also building another affordable housing complex in Crystal near Bass Lake Road.
