Now, police are urging the public to help them identify the suspect.
The NYPD said the suspect followed the woman into an apartment building in the Inwood neighborhood on Monday shortly before 9 a.m. As she walked inside, he allegedly exposed himself, made sexual advances, and tried to force his way inside.
The woman fought him off after a brief struggle, police said, with the suspect eventually running away. Emergency medical workers treated her at the scene for minor injuries, police said.
The NYPD released a surveillance video of the suspect and asked the public for help identifying him. The suspect was described as having a beard and was last seen wearing black pants, a black jacket, boots, and a black cap. Police said he was wanted in connection with an attempted rape.
No arrest had been announced as of Friday, and the investigation was ongoing.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident was asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted online or through the department’s social media channels. The NYPD says all calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential.
