It’s been an interesting week for the weather in New York City.

On Tuesday, New York saw its first snowfall. On Tuesday and Wednesday night, the northern lights were seen in southern New York, dancing across the night sky.

On Thursday, the hail may have been soft, small pellets called graupel. Graupel, according to the National Severe Storms Laboratory, forms when water droplets below 32 degrees freeze onto a snow crystal. The process, called riming, can grow the snow crystals to a larger size, but not bigger than 0.2 inches.

The weather is expected to turn sour on Saturday and Sunday in the tri-state area, so watch your head for more potential hail!
