On Nov. 1, around 60,000 participants will be running the New York Marathon on its 50th anniversary.

The race will start at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island and will finish in Central Park near the Tavern on the Green.

The professional starts for women will begin at 8:35 a.m. with the men starting at 9:05 a.m. Additional waves will run starting at 9:10, 9:45, 10:20, 10:55 and 11:30 a.m. Results will be recorded until 10 p.m.

This year, there are a few changes and important details that runners and spectators should be aware of.

Updated Course

For the first time in 15 years, New York Road Runners has altered the course between miles 20 and 21 in an effort to minimize the race’s impact on the Bronx. The course is now set up to have runners making a left onto East 135th Street, a right on Alexander Avenue, followed by a straight shot down, and then a left on East 141st Street before turning left on Third Avenue and then making a right onto East 138thSstreet to continue across the Madison Avenue Bridge.

The previous route included a left turn on East 138th Street after Alexander Avenue. The change will make it less difficult for residents of NYCHA’s Patterson building and local business to access the space. Instead of the previous seven loops that runners would take in this mile, it is now five.
