NEW YORK – Police are asking for the public’s help as a 28-year-old woman fights for her life after being stabbed multiple times in the neck while jogging along a Brooklyn bike path on Friday evening.
What we know:
The victim, identified by police as Katie Suarez, was attacked around 8 p.m. Friday while running eastbound on the Shore Parkway Greenway, near Shore Parkway and Bay 17th Street.
Suarez was reportedly training and had been scheduled to run in the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday.
Earlier that evening, Suarez met with her mother near her job after finishing work before going out for her run alone, according to police. Her father had also planned to meet up with them and had been in contact with Suarez when she was roughly half a mile—about five minutes—away. When her parents suddenly lost contact with her moments later, they went searching for her. Her father discovered her lying on the path with stab wounds on both sides of her neck and immediately alerted police.
Emergency Medical Services quickly responded to the scene and transported the 28-year-old to NYU Langone Health, where she remains in critical condition on life support.
The NYPD has released a photograph of Suarez in her running gear in hopes of finding her attacker.
What we don’t know:
A description of the suspect has yet to be released. While investigators suspect the attack was random, a definitive motive has not been determined, and police are still searching for the person responsible.
What you can do:
Police are urgently asking the public for information. Investigators are specifically asking anyone who may have seen her on the bike path along the Belt Parkway, between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street, around the time of the attack to come forward.
Signs have been posted in the Bath Beach area urging anyone with tips to contact police, and a reward of up to $3,200 is being offered.
Anyone with information regarding this assault is urged to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline.
