NYPD officers shot a man in the Bronx on Monday afternoon after he fired at them, police said.
The shooting occurred around 3:20 p.m. near Bainbridge Avenue and East 194th Street in the Bronx, police said. The NYPD advised the public to avoid the area near 2657 Bainbridge Ave. and expect road closures and delays.
Police said Victor Soto, 49, had been involved in a dispute with several people inside Sammy Gourmet Deli, where he pulled out a firearm and pointed it at people inside, causing them to duck for cover.
The man then left the deli and began walking northbound with the gun in his hand, slamming it against the deli’s glass window, according to police.
The NYPD said two officers arrived at the scene and ordered the man to drop the gun. Police said he ignored their commands and instead pointed the firearm directly at the officers.
This led to “an exchange of gunfire between the officers and the subject,” according to NYPD Assistant Chief Aneudy Castillo, who spoke at a news conference Monday evening.
“As the subject is discharging his weapon, he is continuing northbound and firing behind him in broad daylight with civilians in the area,” Castillo said.
Officers shot the man and took him into custody, police said. Soto was hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to survive, according to Castillo.
Attorney information for Soto was not immediately available.
Castillo said the incident was captured on police body cameras and surveillance cameras both inside and outside the deli. He said police also relied on eyewitness accounts in describing what happened.
The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is reviewing the shooting.
