MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — A 20-year-old man who walked into multiple buildings on the Upper East Side and pointed a gun at people was fatally shot by police officers on Thursday, according to authorities.

Police said the suspect went into an apartment building on Madison Avenue around 7 p.m. He got into an elevator with a man and pulled out a gun without provocation, according to authorities.

Police said he rode the elevator with the man, then left the building and went into a nearby deli. There, he went behind the counter, pointed a gun at the deli worker, and told him, “Call 911, I am going down to the hospital to shoot it up,” according to authorities.

Police said the suspect stole the deli worker’s phone, then headed toward Mount Sinai Hospital.

He entered the hospital around 7:08 p.m., stayed briefly, then walked back out and left his gun near a tree, according to authorities. Police said he re-entered the hospital, where an off-duty NYPD officer was working security.

The suspect started acting erratically and claimed he had a gun, according to authorities. Police said the off-duty officer tried to remove him from the hospital, leading to a struggle.

The 20-year-old then walked outside, retrieved his gun, and the off-duty officer called for backup, according to authorities. Police said while walking, the suspect encountered officers on 96th Street and Madison Avenue and fired his gun.

Pedestrians were outside at the time, according to authorities.

Police said an officer then fired back, hitting the man. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Police said no officers were hit by gunfire. The suspect had no prior history with police, according to authorities.
