The big day is finally here! Opening day of the regular firearm deer hunting season in Western New York is this Saturday, November 15. Hunters across the region are gearing up, and if the recent deer movement is any indication, it’s going to be an exciting weekend in the woods.
Important Tagging and Reporting Reminders from the DEC
For those who have a successful hunt, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has a few important reminders about tagging and reporting your harvest.
According to a recent Facebook post from the DEC, deer and bear hunters using paper tags must report their harvest within 48 hours, while those using an E-tag or electronic license in the app must report it immediately.
Hunting Safety Rules for Firearm Season
Along with reporting rules, hunters should make sure they follow all New York State hunting safety regulations. If you’re heading into the woods with a firearm this weekend, remember to wear the required amount of blaze orange or other visible clothing to stay safe and visible.
No More Back Tags But Licensing Is Much Simpler Now
For those of us who grew up hunting with back tags, it still feels strange that they’re no longer required. Many hunters remember the panic of opening morning when a back tag was missing, or worse, still attached to last season’s jacket. Even though it’s a change, tagging game is now much more convenient, and getting your New York hunting license is easier than ever.

What to Do If You Forget Your Paper License
It happens, especially when you’re rushing to get to camp. According to the DEC, if you forget your paper license, or use an e-tag, and need to leave a carcass somewhere, you must attach a tag with your name, hunter ID, and other required information. The DEC stresses that the temporary tag should be easy to read and securely attached.
“Please note: If an e-tagged carcass is left anywhere other than the hunter’s home or vehicle (like with a meat processor), the hunter must attach a written tag with their name, 12-digit DEC ID, and 8-digit harvest report confirmation number. Any tag of your own making will do, as long as this information is legible”!
Opening Day Weather Forecast for Western New York
The forecast for opening morning in Western New York calls for a quiet start, with rain expected later in the afternoon. Early conditions look favorable for hunters planning to be in the woods at first light.
Good luck, stay safe, and remember to properly tag and report any deer or bear you harvest this weekend!
