STATEN ISLAND, NY — Sea View Playwright’s Theatre will open Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Three Tall Women” today for a two-weekend run at its Staten Island location.
The production features Regina Paleau as “A”, Cheryl Grogan-Wagner as “B,” and Emma White as “C,” under the direction of Craig Stoebling. The show will run for five performances through Nov. 23.
Albee’s play tells the story of three women in two distinct parts. The first half presents a naturalistic conversation between a wealthy nonagenarian known as “A,” her middle-aged caretaker “B,” and a young lawyer “C.” In the second half, the three women transform into personifications of the same woman at different ages — 92, 52, and 26 — as they confront her life, memories and regrets.
The play is largely autobiographical and based on Albee’s contentious relationship with his adopted mother. It explores themes of aging, memory, and self-deception through the interactions of the three characters.
“Three Tall Women” premiered off-Broadway in 1994 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama that year. The play made its London West End debut in 1995, featuring Maggie Smith in the role of “A,” and returned to Broadway in 2018 with Glenda Jackson as “A” and Laurie Metcalf as “B,” winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
Albee has long been considered one of America’s foremost playwrights. His works include “The Zoo Story,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?” In 2023, Sea View Playwright’s Theatre produced Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “At Home at the Zoo,” which were partially funded by a NYSCA grant through Staten Island Arts.
Performances of “Three Tall Women” are scheduled for today, Saturday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. The theater is located at 460 Brielle Ave., Sea View.
