STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Hawks and foxes and coyotes, oh my!
Mike Donovan, a Graniteville resident, recently captured a photo of what appears to be a coyote on a neighborhood street.
The canine creature with a predominantly gray coat was seen on Pyramid Court in the vicinity of Lamberts Lane at around 7:45 p.m. Thursday night.
“I was driving, I pulled over and I said, ‘Wow, that’s a big boy,’” Donovan said. “I thought maybe it was a dog or something, like a stray dog, and I stopped right at the corner, at the intersection . . . I was like ‘what the hell?’”
This isn’t the first time Donovan has seen this type of animal on the Island. He said he previously had seen a canine that looked like a coyote near a gas station on South Avenue.
In 2022, wildlife experts with the city Department of Parks and Recreation confirmed that at least one coyote was living in the borough.
“Over the last several decades, coyotes have been expanding their natural range in response to ample food and open habitat,” Anessa Hodgson, a Parks Department spokesperson, previously said. At the time, she noted that coyotes also resided in the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan.
That coyote was confirmed to be living in the western portion of the Island, but the Parks Department shared that coyotes can travel from three to 10 miles in a single day. The wildlife experts previously said Staten Islanders should not be alarmed if they spot it in the wild as most are not dangerous to humans.
