New York Jets players have asked fans to “send prayers” and support their teammate Kris Boyd who remains in critical condition after he was shot in midtown Manhattan in New York City overnight.

A team representative said in a statement to Newsweek: “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.”

Newsweek reached out by email on Sunday afternoon to the NYPD for comment and additional information.

The Context

Boyd, a 29-year-old cornerback for the Jets, played football at the University of Texas at Austin before entering the 2019 NFL draft and joining the Minnesota Vikings.

He remained in Minnesota for three seasons before signing with the Cardinals, whom he departed midseason in 2023, instead joining the Houston Texans practice squad, whom he resigned with the following season.

However, after a tumultuous finale to his time with the Texans, Boyd moved to New York and signed a one-year contract with the Jets in March 2025.

What To Know

The Jets played their week 11 game on Thursday, leaving them free for Sunday, but the players woke up instead to news that their teammate had been shot and was in the hospital.

Boyd was shot in the abdomen and critically wounded at around 2 a.m. Sunday outside the restaurant Sei Less on West 38 Street near Seventh Avenue. The New York Post reported that the shooting occurred after a “dispute turned violent,” with the gunman getting off two shots before making his escape from the scene in a BMW.

A second vehicle, a silver Mercedes-Benz, was also seen fleeing the scene. Boyd was with friends at the time of the shooting, and it remains unclear if he was the intended target.

Boyd was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment, with police telling ESPN that he’s in “critical but stable condition.”

Defensive end Jermaine Johnson took to X to ask for “everybody please send prayers” for Boyd and his family, and then added a prayer, writing: “Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety. Lord I ask that you please just get him through this safely.”

Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips also wrote on X to offer a prayer for Boyd, writing: “Father God, we come to you right now, asking for your healing power over KB. You are a God of miracles. Lord, place your mighty hand on him as he fights lord God. Guide every doctor, nurse, and surgeon who touches him lord. Give his family strength! Kris is a fighter and we’re all here for him.”

What Happens Next?

As of Sunday afternoon, police have made no arrests and the shooting remains under investigation, with photos on social media showing a police presence still covering the scene and keeping it cordoned off from the public.
