WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WCAX) – U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York focused on the cost of tariffs during a visit to the North Country on Monday.
Schumer was joined in Watertown by community leaders affected by higher costs that they say were caused by tariffs, and members of the Port Authority who say tariffs are also contributing to lower cross-border travel.
Schumer is calling on New York Republicans to press House Speaker Mike Johnson to hold a vote on the Senate’s resolution that would repeal President Trump’s tariffs.
He also poured cold water on the prospect of Trump’s proposed $2,000 tariff checks.
“I don’t even think these checks will come about. It’s a very whimsical thing. He’s feeling the heat, so he says he is going to send checks to people. First, those checks aren’t enough to make up the damage, but second, who knows if those checks will even come,” said Schumer, D-Senate Minority Leader.
Data from Customs and Border Protection show there were 3 million fewer crossings across the northern border last month compared to the same time last year.
