Last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul met with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to discuss his agenda. Many items that Mamdani has pushed for have statewide budgetary implications, as New York faces a $26.8 billion cumulative budget gap by 2029 and uncertainty coming out of Washington. Politico last week reported that Hochul is at least considering a corporate tax hike, and on Monday the governor addressed the issue of revenue raisers. Also, district attorneys have been urging the New York state Legislature to reform its “Raise the Age” law since its passage in 2017. “Raise the Age” refers a series of laws that raises the age of criminal responsibility for young people to 18 for many crimes. Albany Mayor-elect Dorcey Applyrs told Capital Tonight that she is willing to weigh in on the conversation around “Raise the Age,” but it is not her primary focus.
