NEW YORK CITY (WPIX) — New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd is in critical condition after being shot in Midtown, sources told Nexstar’s WPIX.

The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. on 38th Street, according to the NYPD. A 29-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said.

Police did not identify the man as Boyd, but a spokesperson for the Jets said the team is aware of the shooting.

“We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time,” the spokesperson said.

Boyd has been on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury he got in practice, according to the team. He has not played this season after signing with the Jets in March.

Boyd’s teammates took to social media, pulling for his recovery.

“Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family,” Jermaine Johnson said in a post to X.

In a statement, Mayor Eric Adams said Boyd’s shooting is a reminder of the threat posed by gun violence in the city.

“Although we’ve gotten shootings to historic lows in our city, we must continue to work to end gun violence. Too many young lives have been tragically altered and cut short by this epidemic,” he said in a post to X.

Drafted by the Minnesota Vikings out of Texas in 2019, Boyd has played for the Vikings, the Arizona Cardinals, and the Houston Texans.
