PROSPECT HEIGHTS AND SUNSET PARK — A DEACON SERVING PARISHES IN SUNSET PARK AND BOROUGH PARK HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM MINISTRY, Bishop Robert J. Brennan of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn announced on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Deacon Danny Rodriguez, 63, was removed from his diaconal assignment at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica in Sunset Park following the recommendation of the independent Diocesan Review Board, which had been investigating claims against Rodriguez from a July 2025 report that alleged sexual abuse of a minor in an incident from about 20 years ago. The DRB found sufficient information to substantiate allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor and recommended Deacon Rodriguez’s removal from ministry.
Although not a legal determination of guilt, the removal from ministry is recognition of the possibility that wrongdoing may have taken place. The removal bars Rodriguez from exercising any diaconate ministry. His name will also be added to the List of Credibly Accused Clergy on the Diocese of Brooklyn website.
Immediately after his May 25, 2019, diaconate ordination, Rodriguez began serving Our Lady of Perpetual Help. He has served additionally at St. Agatha Church in Sunset Park and at St. Catharine of Alexandria Church.
