NEW YORK (PIX11) – Some 1,183 drivers were fined for toll violations on New York City’s bridges and tunnels in October, according to the MTA.
It’s a small jump from the month before, when 1,050 drivers received summonses. In August, there were many more violations – 1,438. Enforcement operations peaked in the summer, when officials issued over 3,500 summonses for toll violations, hazardous driving and other infractions.
According to Charles Chavez, senior vice president of security and operations, the MTA is still cracking down on “serial toll evaders.” The worst of the worst have avoided paying hundreds of tolls, he said.
“Pay your tolls,” Chavez said. “That’s the simplest and easiest way to avoid fees and other issues.”
The enforcement has continued into November. On Sunday, law enforcement agencies conducted a toll enforcement and ghost car operation on the Throggs Neck Bridge, officials said.
Law enforcement also remained focused on “ghost cars,” cars with obscured license plates, in recent months. Over 38,000 ghost cars have been seized from New York City streets since 2022, Mayor Eric Adams announced earlier this year.
