A dead fetus was found in a pile of leaves outside a building in New York, according to authorities.

In an email to The National News Desk, police said the gruesome discovery was made in Brooklyn on Thursday shortly after 11 a.m.

Authorities said officers responded to a 911 call about a person who was behind a building at 1580 East 102nd Street. When police arrived at the scene, they found an “unconscious and unresponsive” baby boy.

EMS responded and pronounced the newborn deceased at the scene,” police said in the email.

The New York Post said the fetus was found inside a black bag that was “buried among a mound of fallen leaves.”

It was not immediately known how long the fetus was outside before he was found.

Police said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine the cause of death.

“There are no arrests at this time, and the investigation is ongoing,” police said.
