New Yorkers know Mamdani. Now, meet the mini-Mamdani’s: young, left-wing progressives copping the incoming mayor’s style, and his politics.
“What Zohran’s election proved is that this city is ready to turn the page on machine politics,” Usamah Andrabi, spokesman for Justice Democrats, said.

“We do see it as an overlooked opportunity for the national progressive movement to take out an entrenched corporate incumbent,” Andrabi said.
2026 is shaping up to be a raucous campaign season for House Democrats in New York.
There will be at least two open seats — District 7 and District 12 — currently held by outgoing Reps. Nydia Velázquez and Jerry Nadler, who each announced plans to retire at the end of their current term.
Then, there are potential or declared candidates in five districts with incumbents: Districts six, eight, 10, 13 and 15.
The playbook for these left-wing challengers: attacking incumbents’ corporate contributions, how they fight President Donald Trump, and support for Israel and from AIPAC — the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
“Why should we let Adriano Espaillat vote to spend billions on bombs overseas?” one political ad asks.
“I’ve been organizing around issues of immigration, around Black liberation, around Palestinian liberation as well,” said Darializa Avila Chevalier, the candidate Justice Democrats is supporting against Espaillat.
Avila Chevalier is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
“They’re talking about not being able to afford their rent. They’re talking about feeling just like horrible about seeing the way our tax dollars are being spent on weapons to destroy communities abroad,” Avila Chevalier said of the voters she talks to.
Eduardo Castell, a spokesperson for Espaillat, welcomed a “full and robust primary.”
“He has led the fight to make the city more affordable for working families and to stand up for communities too often overlooked,” Castell said in a statement.
It’s a campaign play also being used against incumbents like Rep. Ritchie Torres, Rep. Dan Goldman and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries — the House Democratic leader.
It’s not yet determined who the new power player on the left, the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, will support after getting one of its members, Mamdani, elected.
Avila Chevalier wouldn’t say whether she’s formally asked for an endorsement.
“I just wanna respect all of their privacy and processes on this,” she said.
The NYC DSA did not return a request for an interview.
Chi Ossé, a City Councilman, wants DSA’s support to challenge Jeffries.
“NYC DSA members this can only be done and only be tried in partnership with you,” Ossé said in a post to social media.
But Mamdani wants them to stand down.
