STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Many New Yorkers are still waiting to receive their first-ever inflation refund checks, and state officials say the payments will begin arriving soon for those who have not yet received them.
On Sept. 27, 2025, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the state’s first-ever inflation refund checks, part of the 2025–2026 New York state budget, aimed at providing relief to New Yorkers who have paid higher sales taxes due to inflation.
According to the city’s 311 website, checks began mailing at the end of September 2025, and will continue over several weeks. Individuals may receive their payments sooner or later than their neighbors, as mailings are not based on zip code or region.
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance said more than 8 million New Yorkers will receive refunds. Due to the large volume, individuals may receive their checks over the coming weeks. The department also noted it cannot provide a specific delivery schedule to individuals inquiring about the status of their checks.
People are only eligible for the one-time payment of up to $400 if they filed a New York State resident income tax return, reported income within the qualifying thresholds, and were not claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return.
The inflation refund checks are based on individuals’ income and filing status from the 2023 tax year.
Here’s how much you can receive:
Single filers: Individuals who filed as single and earned $75,000 or less may receive up to $200. Those with income of more than $75,000 but not more than $150,000 may receive up to $150.Married filing jointly: Couples who filed jointly and earned $150,000 or less may receive up to $400.
