THE BRONX — When Monsignor Farrell trekked to New Rochelle last month and took down perennial powerhouse and No. 1-state ranked Iona Prep in its own backyard, it certainly raised a lot of eyebrows.
But it also wakened a sleeping giant, who undoubtedly had Nov. 22 circled on its calendar.
University of North Carolina commit running back Crew Davis and quarterback Julian Guzman spearheaded a lethal rushing attack that paved the way to 507 yards of total offense as the Gaels avenged their only loss of the season with a 42-20 CHSFL AAA title-game victory over the Lions on Saturday at Fordham University.
Farrell, which entered the championship the state’s No. 2-ranked team and on a seven-game winning streak, saw its highly successful season come to an end with a 9-2 mark. The Lions, who defeated Iona 28-21 on Oct. 27, were attempting to win its first league championship since 2000.
The Gaels, meanwhile, won their third AAA title in five years to improved to 10-1 overall. They’ll host St. Francis of Hamburg, N.Y. — a 41-34 winner over Canisius on Saturday — in the state championship game on Nov. 29.
