WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump met with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani (D) in the Oval Office Friday, with both men offering praise for each other after months of trading insults during the city’s recent campaign.
“I met with a man who is a very rational person. I met with a man who wants to really wants to see New York be great again. And I can say again, because New York was great,” Trump said.
Mamdani said he appreciated the meeting’s focus on shared goals rather than disagreements.
“I think both President Trump and I, we are very clear about our positions and our views, and what I really appreciate about the president is the meeting that we had focused not on places of disagreement, which there are many, and also focused on the shared purpose that we have in serving New Yorkers,” Mamdani said.
The cordial tone marked a shift from their previous exchanges. Trump has called Mamdani a “communist mayor” and Mamdani had called Trump a “fascist.”
The two men discussed public safety, affordability and economic security during their meeting.
